Stylish eyewear doesn’t need to be uncomfortable. As the vintage styles of the 50s, 60s and 70s reemerge in modern fashion, thick frames and rimless glasses are more popular than ever. Many eyewear companies make frames that look good but are uncomfortable. At the Spectacle, every piece of eyewear is stylish and comfortable.

Since 1964, founder John Cottam has been designing and engineering comfortable eyewear. After a boyhood experience of struggling to make his eyewear comfortable, he’s spent 54 years making custom, vintage eyewear. Our certified and licensed opticians specialize in custom eyewear, rimless glasses and progressive lenses. We are committed to helping you find the perfect eyewear that fits your persona. Come in for an obligation-free evaluation, and we can show you some of the types of vintage eyewear that best fit naturally and comfortably.

Types of Vintage Eyewear

We offer comfortable vintage eyewear from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Browline frames were popular in the 50s and 60s, and they reemerged in popular culture around 2010 due to their retro style. They receive their name from their thick upper frame that sits at eyebrow level. Cat eye frames were predominately worn by women (think Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor) because of their up-sweeping outer ends. If you’re not sure which frames would best fit your face, come in for a free consultation. We are located at Trolley Square in downtown Salt Lake City, and we are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Other unique, vintage types of eyewear include wayfarer frames, bug-eye glasses, and rimless glasses. Wayfarer frames have thick, trapezoidal rims that convey a sense of rebelliousness and independence. They have recently gained popularity after their peak throughout the 50s and 60s. Bug eye glasses are the quintessential round lenses of the 80s. They are for anybody looking to sport a retro and timeless look.
