What Does an Optician Do?

Many don’t really know the difference between optometrists, opticians, and ophthalmologists. While they’re all vital to the process of vision correction and ensuring your eyes are healthy, each of these professionals occupy very different spaces within that process. Opticians, for example, are the ones who interpret prescriptions given out by the optometrists and ophthalmologists, and then work with patients to provide glasses that are, comfortable, stylish and adequately work to improve the patient’s vision for the better.

The Spectacle has been a proud provider of opticianry services to those around Salt Lake City since 1985. Optician Job Description

Opticians need to have a broad scope of knowledge when it comes to prescription eyewear for adults and children alike. When someone comes from an optometrist or an ophthalmologist with a prescription, it’s the opticians role to interpret that information, then assist in providing or creating a pair of eyewear to match that person’s eyewear needs.

Opticians work with a variety of people daily to help them find the right eyewear for their needs. They’ll advise patients on different types of lenses and frames, help them choose the right style and fit for their face, and advise them as to how they should wear and care for their new glasses.

Responsibilities of an Optician

  • Interpret prescriptions from optometrists and ophthalmologists and customize lenses accordingly.
  • Give advice on lens types, frames, and eyewear style.
  • Take facial measurements to provide the right size and fit for patients. That includes bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of the eyes.
  • Customize eyewear, including cutting and coloring custom-shaped lenses. Then assemble these custom eyeglasses into frames.
